New Bullying Statute

Call it a coincidence, but the General Assembly has passed a bill addressing the subject of bullying in schools. Read an article about it here. The bill requires school districts to develop a policy that prohibits harassment, intimidation or bullying.

To see the bill itself, click here and look up SB 1621 by Senator Black.

My daughter has been bullied for the past two years. She is now in high school. She has only been there for 2 weeks and already a bully knocked her in the back of the head. She has a medical condition where stress causes her immune system to fail at times. Can you give me any information on what we can do to protect her. She is a great kid and an excellent student. She wants to go to school and learn and have fun. It's not fair that she has to go to school and face another day of fear. Sonya (mom)

I assume that you have asked the school for help and been rejected.

I would then ask in writing - and inform the school that they have an obligation to address the issue with the bullies. I would go to the top of the school administration and complain - in writing - about the problem. Complaints in writing tend to get responses.

Enlist the help of the school guidance counselor or social worker or nurse. These folks can be good advocates.

Sorry for your problem.
